All right. Hope you're doing well. Today I'm going to talk to you about success habits. So throughout my life I've had the great privilege of working with a lot of high achievers. I got to know some professional athletes, people who've argued cases before the United States Supreme Court, met senators, congressmen, even presidents. And through that experience, all those different interactions with people, I've got to recognize different trends in successful people. That there's certain habits that they all seem to embrace in their lives. And what I've tried to do is I try to model that.
Success leaves clues. So when you study those clues, you study those trends, those habits, those practices, those behaviors, you start to embody the success that these people have. So today I want to share with you the five success habits that I've identified with each of these people and it comes up every single time and you'll start to recognize it after my talk today. You'll start to see that there are indeed these five habits embodied by people who are successful.
So what are they? The first one, the first one that comes up every single time is that they are consistent in their work. They're consistently moving forward. They're consistently showing up. So that those that are, for example athletes, are showing up and applying their craft in the gym every single day. Those who are business people, they're focusing every single day on moving their business forward. That people who are consistent, who are consistently moving forward are more successful than those people that are streakers. They show up, for example, and exercise every single day for seven days and then they fall off the ladder for seven days. And they may come back for a streak of seven days and then they fall off the ladder for seven days. Those who show up every single day, it may not be for an extended period of time, but they're consistently showing up, see the greatest gain. So the first success habit is consistency.
The second one is urgency. They have this sense of urgency that they must get things done. They don't procrastinate. They don't put things off to tomorrow that can be done today. They have this urgency about them. They show up and they're urgent to get things done. Recognize that, see it. Do you feel that sense of urgency or do you feel this drift in your life? Do you feel like things will happen as they may or are you making things happen because you feel this ticktock happening in your head that you need to get things done because time wasted today will not be regained? That sense of urgency is the second habit.
The third habit, conversely, is patience. While they have this sense of urgency in the moment, they're patient for the results. They are not what we call, they're not scoreboard watchers. They're showing up in the moment, focusing on the moment, recognizing that by putting the left foot and right foot, left foot, right foot, up the mountain hill climb that they eventually will show up at the mountain top. Time will happen, but if they show up every single day, consistency with a sense of urgency and they're patient, that the results will show up. That they will ultimately find themselves at the top of the mountain.
All right. Fourth habit, energy. Energy. These are people who have high energy. You ever been around people who are energy drainers? Just being around them you feel like they've become energy zombies. They've sucked the life out of you. People who are successful are not energy zombies. They are energy givers. They're energy radiators. They're people who show up in life, but being around them, you feel energized because they have so much energy and excitement about their life and the passion that they're working on that they can't help but radiate energy to the outside world. So the success habit, the fourth one, is energy. They have high levels of energy about their passion, about their life, about how they're showing up in the world.
And the last one is expectancy. They just expect to win. Some people call it optimism. Some people call it growth mindset. I like to use the word expectancy. They live with expectancy that by doing the things that they're doing, they will succeed. Do you know these people? Do you know these people that show up in your life who, whatever happens, they just keep moving forward with a smile on their face, expecting things will turn out the right way. And that is a success habit that I've seen time and time again with every single successful person I've been around.
So to recap for today, five success habits you should adopt, consistency, urgency, patience, energy and expectancy. Do you recognize those in your own life? Do you wake up every morning knowing that you're going to do what you did yesterday that gets you one step closer, that this idea of consistently showing up is going to move you forward? Do you show up with this sense of urgency that things must get done? Do you hate procrastination? Do you hate putting things off that you know you need to get done that's going to move the lever of success for you? Do you have this level of patience in your life, knowing even though you have the sense of urgency in the moment, that you're patient with the results?
You're patient on yourself. You don't beat yourself up saying that, "Oh. Things are not happening on my timeline. Surely, surely it should have happened by now," or comparing yourself to other people and saying, "But he did it by then," or, "She did it by then," or, "He is much further along than I am." Or are you just focused on where you are, patient in the understanding that it will happen when it happens, but it will only happen because of you? Be consistent in showing up with a sense of urgency and energy and expectancy.
So where are you today? These are things I've struggled with all my life, all five of those things and it's only by recognizing that these are the five things that successful people do. So if I'm going to be successful in whatever area of my life, I need to adopt those in my life. Consistency, urgency, patience, energy and expectancy, those five things make a fist. Those five things, the fist that moves you forward, those five things. If you're missing one of them, the whole thing falls apart.
If you're not consistent, it doesn't matter if you're showing up with energy because you're not going to be showing up if you're not showing up with a sense of urgency. You might be consistently showing up to the gym and then laying on a bench for 30 minutes and then leaving. If you're not patient for the results, you're going to be, get frustrated and ultimately you won't be consistent because the frustration, your impatience will drive you off course. If you're not showing up with energy, you may show up to your job, but you don't have the energy to get you through the day, then it comes two o'clock, three o'clock in the afternoon and you've mentally checked out. You find yourself surfing on the internet.
And the last one about expectancy is something that you probably should focus on because it's something I try to work on myself. This idea that so many people have now recognized as being so important. That you either expect things to work out because you know through your own efforts it's going to happen or do you have what's called a fixed mindset? That it doesn't really matter what happens, I'm not smart enough. There's nothing I can do to get better grades or show up better in my life. It's just the world is against me, this opposite view from expectancy. This idea that nothing's going to happen the way it's going to happen. I wasn't born with all the advantages of somebody else. Woe is me. Woe is me.
Don't ever let yourself fall into that trap. Be mindful of where you're showing up in the world. Be consistent. Have a sense of urgency. Be patient. Have high energy and expect to win. It's my challenge for myself. My challenge for you, go out there every single day. Live with consistency, urgency, patience, energy and expectancy and seize your legacy.
